Border Ministry hosts more than 200 teams yearly at seven different mission sites along the 2,000 mile border. There are a variety of education, health, study, construction, community outreach, evangelistic and youth activities in which mission teams can be involved for a duration of 2-14 days.
The main purpose of a mission trip is sharing life and ministry with our Mexican brothers and sisters. Not only will you be able to help in some specific way, you will also become acquainted with each other and learn to be open to new ideas and customs. you will leave the area understanding more about mission endeavors on the border as well as the complex soicla political, religious, and economic situation.
Study Teams: Visits are organized for teams of all ages which focus on the development of the Presbyterian missions and the historical, social, political, and economic realities along the border. Teams study and reflect on the similarities and differences in theology and worldview between the two Presbyterian denominations. They learn how the social, economic, and political setting of a faith community influences its expression of the gospel. Participants then return to their home congregations to interpret and share this bi-national mission experience.
Evangelism Teams: Teams focus their participation on various evangelism activities of the local church. This may include groups of two or three visiting families in the neighborhood, inviting people to evangelistic campaigns, vacation bible school, concert tours and audio video presentations.
Health Education Teams: A team may hold a “health fair” where patients are seen and treated. While others participate in health education workshops. Some sites have reciprocal agreements with Mexican hospitals that allow U.S. doctors/specialists to operate using their facilities. Medical specialists arrange ahead with a mission site to advertise their services.Contact the Presbyterian Border Ministry office in San Antonio and you will be sent: a Resource Manual for Mission Team Leaders, informational brochure on all mission sites, an orientation video called “ Mission without Barriers” and an interactive video named “So you are going on a Mission Trip.” You should also order the video “Planning an Excellent Adventure” from the PCUSA Worldwide Ministries Division.
